What I’m Watching: Law and Order Special Victims Unit

Besides Grey’s Anatomy, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, otherwise known as SVU, is my absolute favorite show on TV. If you don’t know, SVU is a police/legal/crime drama television series that is set in New York City. There have been 16 seasons so far, with season 17 coming out in just one week! The cast has changed tremendously, with different characters coming and going, but Detective Olivia Benson, otherwise known as actress Mariska Hargitay, is the only one who has stayed since season 1 episode 1.

The show is centered around the detectives, the Assistant District Attorney (ADA), and the medical examiners as they deal with sexually based offenses happening in NYC. Each episode follows a crime that these NYPD detectives are trying to solve, as well as following some personal aspects of the detectives. The show is widely known for the partnership between Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler, although Stabler is no longer on the show. They were partners for almost the entirety of their careers, and their friendship added a special dynamic to the show.

One of the reasons why I really enjoy this show is because it keeps me interested the entire episode. There’s never a point where I’m bored and want to turn it off because everything is exciting and relevant. I love seeing how the investigations and trials are going to turn out. If you’re a fan of drama and plot twists, I’m sure you will love this show. Each episode is fresh and new and you’ll be binge-watching season after season before you know it.

Seasons 13-16 are currently on Netflix, but I highly recommend finding some earlier seasons to watch, where Detective Stabler is still on the show. The newer seasons are very good, but nothing beats the Benson/Stabler partnership.

Season 17 premieres next Wednesday, September 23rd at 9pm on NBC.
