With the holiday season in full swing, one of my favorite things to do is snuggling up on the couch with a hot drink and watching a movie. There are tons of classics, comedies, romances and kid-friendly movies, and it can sometimes get overwhelming, but I’m here to give you my top 12 that you definitely need to watch this season!
This one goes without saying, Elf is just wonderful. It’s incredibly funny and it’s the kind of movie anyone can enjoy.
2. The Santa Clause Trilogy
Although the first movie is one of my all-time favorites, the second and third movies in this series are also amazing. A funny, lighthearted story about Scott Calvin, played by Tim Allen, becoming Santa, finding a wife so that he remains Santa, and trying not to let Jack Frost take over the north pole.
3. Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas
This movie is about a fictitious town called Whoville and their lives during Christmas while dealing with The Grinch, who absolutely hates everything about Christmas. This version is definitely on par than the animated version, mainly because Jim Carrey does an excellent job of playing The Grinch.
4. Home Alone
Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, is accidentally left home when his family leaves for Christmas vacation. Culkin’s character makes this movie as great as it is because he’s obnoxious and funny while still being extremely clever. While you’re at it, watch Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. You won’t regret it.
5. The Polar Express
If I were to go so far as to have an absolute favorite Christmas movie, I think this would be it. A young boy travels with other children to the north pole, and they learn a lot about the spirit of Christmas.
6. Love Actually
This movie is a funny romance, with a bunch of intertwined stories. It includes many of our favorite actors and actresses, and it’s definitely a crowd pleaser.
7. A Christmas Carol/Scrooge
A Christmas Carol is a story written by Charles Dickens. There are many film adaptations of this movie but the one I grew up watching was released in 1970 and titled Scrooge. More recently, Disney released an animated version titled A Christmas Carol and it’s definitely a cute way to depict the classic story!
8. Christmas with the Kranks
Tim Allen stars in yet another Christmas movie, and it’s incredibly funny. The Kranks decide not to celebrate Christmas because their only daughter isn’t home, but she decided to return home at the last minute, and they scramble to make Christmas happen.
9. Arthur Christmas
Arthur Christmas is an adorable, kid-friendly movie. Santa’s son Arthur is on an adventure to give a forgotten present to a young girl to save her Christmas.
10. The Holiday
The Holiday is a wonderful rom-com. This movie follows Amanda Woods, played by Cameron Diaz, and Iris Simpkins, played by Kate Winslet. They both have boy-related problems so they decide to swap houses for two weeks during the holiday season.
11. Just Friends
Just Friends is another amazing Christmas rom-com. After many years apart, two old friends from high school reconnect while visiting their family over Christmas. They realize that those platonic feelings from back in the day, may not be so platonic after all.
12. A Christmas Story
Probably the most known Christmas movie, A Christmas Story follows a young boy named Ralphie who just really wants a Red Ryder BB gun under his Christmas tree. If you don’t watch any other movie on this list, you should at least watch this timeless classic.
