Song to Soundboard: Julia Michaels

As large of a name as last week’s writer was, and as long as he has been in the business, there aren’t many people he hasn’t collaborated with. Our artist this week is a newcomer to the songwriting scene, but has worked with big names that we all listen to. Her connection to Steve is from her work with him on Demi Lovato’s Confident album. A new comer to the songwriting scene, 22 year old Julia Michaels has already worked with some of today’s biggest artists.

Julia moved from Iowa to SoCal at a young age and often accompanied her older sister on her countless auditions and demo recordings. Seeing how music affected and moved people, she took an interest in writing her own. She spent years writing her own poems and passing them along to her sister to sing, before her mom pushed her to sing and play for a renown songwriter during one of her sisters recordings. At just 15, Julia began writing alongside Joleen Belle.

For three years they wrote music and submitted her songs to be featured on tv shows and commercials. After an exciting break of having a song picked up by the Disney Channel’s Austin & Ally, Joleen introduced her to fellow songwriter, Lindy Robbins. The first couple of songs they finished and submitted were picked up immediatley! At just 18 years old, Julia Michaels already had her first major publication, “Fire Starter” by Demi Lovato (how was this not chosen as a single?) and a top 10 single “Slow Down” by Selena Gomez.

If those songs are too far back for you to be listening to anymore, don’t worry because 2015 brought Julia a plethora of music that we all hear on a daily (if not, hourly) basis. Her song’s for Demi, Jason Derulo, Little Mix, Kelly Clarkson, and Nick Jonas were only some of the minor features of the year. Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” and a total of 8 tracks on Selena’s Revival including “Good For You” and “Hands to Myself” are just some of the world’s favorite tracks that you can thank her for!

This year she has charting single “Make Me Like You” by Gwen Stefani and “Just Luv Me” to be released later this year by none other than Britney Spears!

25 and a whiskey fanatic. Sassy, rude, and grouchy because Harry Styles lives 5 minutes away and I’ve never seen him! I have an opinion on everything and not everyone agree’s, but I hope you find humor in my over the top obsession with music and the people who create it. LA is where it’s at, so if there is a show worth seeing, you can be sure to find me there!
