Alright my awesome Trendom readers let’s take it back to the 90’s this week, and we’re gonna take it to one of the greatest rock songs, performed by one of the greatest rock bands (in my opinion), in the world of music that we know today. ‘Just a Girl’ is the incredibly successful lead single from No Doubt’s 1995 album Tragic Kingdom. As a quick refresher, No Doubt is a California based band that formed back in the year 1986, and has had quite a few members that had come and gone. The members that we know today, who have stuck around with the band since 1994 are Gwen Stefani, Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont, and Adrian Young. Gabriel McNair and Stephen Bradley also join the band during tour time and are their session musicians. The song was released September 21, 1995, which means it turned 20 years old just this past week. Happy Birthday ‘Just A Girl.’
This weeks song choice is titled “Just a Girl” by No Doubt
As I said, ‘Just A Girl’ was their first single off Tragic Kingdom, and it’s the song that helped them launch into the mainstream. ‘Just a Girl’ is honestly one of my all time favorite No Doubt songs. The song was written by Gwen Stefani and Tom Dumont. It pretty much screams out all of the resentment that Gwen Stefani felt (and maybe still feels) towards female stereotypes. She mocks the way women are treated or are supposed to act, because well, we’re just girls. Some of her lyrics for instace, “Cause I’m just a girl, little old me/Don’t let me out of your sight.” It’s a mockery of gender roles and you can tell she’s making fun of the fact that women “have to be protected by men to get through their every day life.” This song is a song that any girl can relate to.
No Doubt has six released studio albums. No Doubt, The Beacon Street Collection, Tragic Kingdom,Return of Saturn, Rock Stead, and Push and Shove. All these amazing albums can be found on iTunes and Spotify and they’re most definitely worth the listen.
