“My name is Taylor”, Taylor Swift excitedly squeals to a stadium full of fans as she introduces herself on stage in a new city “and I was born in 1989!”
So much has happened in a year, too much to think about when it comes to Taylor Swift. One year ago today she released her smash-hit album 1989, which turned the music world upside down. It sold 1.3 million albums in the first week, has won countless awards, and she has changed the lives of so many people across the world through her music.
Since so much has happened, I thought that the best way to describe all that has happened is relating events to some of the songs that made 1989 so special …
Welcome To New York
“Everybody here was someone else before …”
One of the most important things to Taylor at this point in her life is her group of friends. A girl who was ridiculed as a teenager, she has assembled a group of goals, self-titled as #SquadGoals, who made her forget that she ever felt alone. Taylor often talks about how she spent all her time and energy on her friends when she was creating 1989. “Welcome To New York” really encompasses the world Taylor created for herself by being brave enough to move to New York City. Her Tribeca apartment has been the lair of many sleepovers and dinner parties, growing her squad closer and closer with each bathrobe-clad, cookie-baking event.
“Darling I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream”
She can make fun of herself now. One of the best things about 1989 tour Taylor is that she says she doesn’t care what other people say, and you can tell she means it. After releasing Blank Space, she showed the world that if they were going to picture her as a crazy ex-girlfriend, she would give them more images than they ever needed. A fun song full of satire, Blank Space hit #1 on the Top 40 and the music video now has over a billion views on Vevo. Talk about using the rumors to fuel you.
“I’ve got that good girl faith and a tight little skirt”
Taylor has come a long way from the lyric “he didn’t like it when I wore high heels” (“Begin Again”, Red, 2012), she is now one of the style icons of our era. Not just known for her red carpet and on-stage fashion, she has become a street style queen, showing up to meet and greets and grabbing lunch in New York City while looking like she stepped out of a magazine. I would do anything for a closet full of 1989-era Taylor clothes.
Out Of The Woods
“When the sun came up I was looking at you. Oh I remember …”
Out Of The Woods live. That is all.
All You Had To Do Was Stay
“People like me are gone forever when you say goodbye”
“I wish that nothing was ever complicated for you. I wish that no one ever messed with your head or acted like things were okay one day, then blew you off the next. I wish that no one ever waited 2 days to text you back, and know they had their phone on them the entire time. Because I only want things to be simple for you, and I only want you to be happy, because you deserve to be happy. You deserve for people to be honest with you. So if I had it my way, I would simplify relationships. In an imaginary world, I would stay that in relationships, I wish you only had two options. Option one: you leave. Option two: you stay.”
Shake It Off
“I’m dancing on my own, I make the moves up as I go …”
This has been the era where Taylor showed us all that being happy is much better than being cool. Dance like crazy, be passionate about whatever you do, and most importantly-do what makes you happy. “Shake It Off” is an anthem for that.
“If you live like that, you live with ghosts …”
Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift got into a bit of a Twitter feud after the announcement of the 2015 VMA Video of the Year Award nominations, and Taylor openly admitted that she was in the wrong with her response to Minaj. But, they both threw us all for a loop when Taylor walked on stage to perform with Nicki as she opened the VMA’s this year. The whole world was talking about it, and it was a moment when 1989 era Taylor really came to life. She was showing that women have to stand together. Even if she and Nicki had their differences, they were able to work through it like adults and come out stronger than ever, This example is just one of the many that shows how Taylor is setting a great example for young people everywhere.
“Say you’ll remember me …”
Secret sessions, Loft 89, Swiftstakes. Taylor told us that she was going to find new ways to meet us all on this tour, and she wasn’t kidding. Every show she does a pre-show meet and greet and then spends late nights after the lights are off and the crowd has left the arena meeting fans hand-picked by her mom during the show. As a girl who met Taylor on this tour, I can stand up for the fact that she is excited to meet everyone. For someone I have always looked to as a big sister, she did not let me down. She truly cares about her fans and wants to meet us however she can, making our Wildest Dreams come true …
I Know Places
“They take their shots, we’re bullet proof. And you know for me it’s always you.”
For a girl who claimed that when she released 1989 she wasn’t looking to date anyone, and that no man would want to date her because they wouldn’t want cameras pointed at them all the time, Calvin Harris definitely proved her wrong. He says that the paparazzi and constant media attention could be “a lot worse” and he would still love her and want to be with her just the same. It’s so amazing, as a Taylor fan of nine years, to see her with someone who has her back and that she can be happy and open about their relationship. They are #SwanGoals, after all.
“She lost him, but she found herself, and somehow that was everything”
Clean represents a lot of what Taylor has stood for in the past year, loving yourself and being happy. You can lose everything, but you have to learn to love yourself because at the end of the day, the only person that you’re guaranteed is you. She has taught us to not rely on anyone else to make us happy, and to surround ourselves with people who love us. This quote from her album booklet really stuck out to me because finding yourself is so important.
It’s been a wild year. Thank you Taylor.
