Tony Gonzalez is one of the best tight end the NFL has ever seen. He’s also my favorite football player. Tony was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1997 and moved on to the Atlanta Falcons in 2009. As a Chiefs fan, it was a sad day to see Tony go. I’m a fan of Tony more than anything, so I cheered for the Falcons just as much as the Chiefs until Tony retired in 2013. I wanted Tony to win the Super Bowl. He deserved it. He’s a super star. Although he never got his Super Bowl ring, Tony is my #mcm.
Tony is very athletic. He played both football and basketball for the University of California, Berkeley before ending his college career a year early to enter the NFL Draft. He has said that he always knew playing football was what he wanted to do as a career.
His history with basketball led to his signature dunk whenever he scored a touchdown. He has scored 111 touchdowns in his 17 years in the NFL.
Tony has tested out his acting skills. Tony was featured on the episode “Mouthful of Diamonds” in season 8 of One Tree Hill. At this point in the series Nathan was working as an agent along side Clay and he made a visit to the Atlanta Falcons where Tony was there to give him advice on the football world.
All around, Tony is just a great guy. He’s been in my life for ages. I can’t remember a time when there wasn’t a poster of Tony hanging in the kitchen pantry. I’ve cheered for him for years, whether that be watching games on TV or every now and again at Arrowhead in Kansas City. My favorite memory of Tony happened after a practice scrimmage in Minneapolis. He stopped to sign a few autographs and ended up giving my brother one of his cleats. It may be my family’s most prized possession to this day. The shoe sits in a glass case with the grass still stuck to the cleats, just like it was when Tony gave it to us all those years ago.
Tony loves his fans just as much as they love him. He still has a locker at Arrowhead. He actually has two, one for his gear and the either for his fan mail. You are missed greatly, Tony but you had one heck of a career. Maybe someday we will meet again and hopefully my hair won’t look quite as wild. Until then I’ll catch you on CBS, looking dapper in a suit and talking about football.
