Healthy Fangirl: Becoming a Yogi

Since 2016 started, I told myself I wanted to do things differently. I wanted to try new things, especially relating to fitness. This year I want to be the healthiest I’ve ever been. About three weeks ago, I decided I wanted to try yoga. I’ve taken some yoga classes offered by my college, but I wanted to have some structure to it, so I utilized the internet for help.

I started following along to random videos I would find on YouTube, but I quickly realized I couldn’t do a lot of the moves. I’m not flexible and I’m not really in shape so I was discouraged. The same thing happened when I came across some yoga sequences on Pinterest. I was annoyed at myself for trying to do something that I couldn’t, so I stopped for about a week.

As many of you probably know, there’s always a beginner stage to starting a new type of workout. I don’t know why I didn’t think of looking for beginner specific videos until one of them popped up on my Pinterest feed. It was a link to Lesley Fightmaster’s 30 Day Challenge for Beginners. I was instantly intrigued and did day 1 right away.

It wasn’t difficult for me at all, and I really enjoyed the slow pace. I like how Lesley takes the time to make sure you have the basics of breathing down. She also encourages good form and gives you tips on how to modify a move that may be painful. I could really feel my body stretching, and I was instantly hooked.

Fast forward and I’m now onto day 9. So far, I’ve really enjoyed every day of this yoga challenge. I can already tell a slight difference in my flexibility, and some of the moves are already becoming easier. I usually do these videos at night, but I’ve also been doing yoga in the mornings too! There are tons of in-bed yoga routines to wake you up, and I’ve been following this 10 minute routine for the past few days.

This 10 Minute Morning Routine Will Transform Your Day

Although its only been a little over a week, I can say that I love yoga. I will definitely be continuing on with this challenge in combination with a quick morning yoga session. Once I’m finished with the 30 days, I want to move onto Lesley Fightmaster’s Yoga Fix 90 program.

If you’re discouraged like I was and think you can’t do yoga, know that you can! It might take a slower pace and simpler moves, but after even a few days you’ll notice a difference. Tweet us at @trendomco about your yoga experience!
