One year ago today, hundreds (thousands? millions??) of One Direction fangirls around the world were settling in to watch the first OTRA tour date through shaky livestreams and Vine videos (even though, for many of us, that meant waking up at 4 o’clock in the morning to catch the action happening across the globe). However, for those of us here at Trendom, the day holds more significance than the start of the craziest and best rollercoaster of a world tour to ever happen. One year ago today, the dream of three women became a reality: Trendom.
In the last twelve months, we’ve striven to keep you up to date on all the latest trends, to support you through your toughest moments (we’re talking everything from boyband members leaving to the struggles of waking up in the morning to the struggles of adulting in the real world) and to be a source of positivity in the often-grimy world of Internet and fangirling. We’ve had an absolute blast getting to know our readers and followers, and we love to share our stories and passions with you all. We hope you’ve enjoyed our first year as much as we have, and here’s to many more! —Alyssa
To celebrate Trendom’s first year of history, we’d like to share with you some reflections from our co-founders:
A fangirl with a dream of sharing happiness, laughter, and distraction through all things fangirling. In the beginning, she brought us all together, and she’ll be here with us till the end.
I always thought of Trendom as just a dream. Just a dream job in my head that would never come to life…until I met Amelia & Rae and it became reality. I can’t believe how quickly the three of us clicked and instantly became lifelong sisters. The past year with Trendom has been amazing. I have met some of my best friends through helping start this up.
Amelia and Rae are the absolute best partners and sisters a girl could ask for. I remember when I first met Amelia and we would DM about how much we wanted to have a coffee date with Harry Styles, and lets be honest, that hasn’t changed. We would talk about how much we wanted to be able to write about our love for One Direction and other musicians and have a platform for it. We got started talking about coming up with our own way to accomplish being able to fangirl for a job.
That’s when Rae came into the picture and tweeted that she wanted to do the same exact thing. The three of us started texting and talking about our dreams for what would become Trendom. I was so excited but also not convinced anything would come of it. We started Skyping and talking about trying to make it a reality. Amelia really stepped up here and got the background work done – website, business plan, etc. Rae immediately got started on coming up with articles and topics to write about, and a schedule for posting our first articles. While they were doing that, I was working on our social media presence and some of the initial marketing.
Then we got to the name. What would we name this thing? We were all a part of the same fandom, loved keeping up with the latest trends, and were (and still are) major fangirls over pretty much everything. I’m not exactly sure how it happened, but after talking about fandoms and trends, Trendom was born. We had to pretty much immediately go live with the site because we wanted to be able to post about One Direction’s first OTRA show, which was like 2 days later.
Those few days were hectic, but also the best. It was amazing to see these two girls work so hard on Trendom and give their all, while also working/studying full time. After the first OTRA show, we quickly did a recap article and posted it live. The response we got was amazing and so encouraging. Our site view count was skyrocketing!
We quickly realized a few weeks into it that we couldn’t do it on our own. That’s when we put out job openings for writers. WOW. You guys were so ready write for us! It was incredible to see your desire to write on the things you were passionate about. If it wasn’t for our writers, I’m sure we would have fallen off the map very quickly. But thanks to our amazing team of Trenders—including writers, coordinators, and other staff—we’ve published over 800 articles and launched a number of social platforms to keep in touch with our quickly growing audience!
It’s amazing to see what Trendom has become in just one short year. I never thought it would explode like this, but I am SO thankful that it did. All the girls I have met while doing this are amazing. Rae and Amelia are the best business partners I could have ever asked for. Thank you, everyone! And Happy Birthday, Trendom!
A fangirl from a small town with big dreams. The Queen of Swerve. She took a chonce and found all the love. The world is hers to conquer, and she’ll conquer it in stride.
This past year has been life changing to say the least. Who knew that a conversation with two random accounts on Twitter would lead to this? Certainly not me. A year ago, I was stuck in a rut. I didn’t know what to do with my life because all I wanted to do was fangirl and write about One Direction in a positive way. I expressed these emotional thoughts on Twitter and that’s when I found Amelia and Hannah. One thing led to another and we agreed on wanting to start a website that focused on positive fangirling and was built on all the love.
When Amelia, Hannah, and I began texting we instantly clicked— almost as if we had known each other forever. It was easy to agree on decisions (still is) and even if we didn’t agree on something, we would merge our ideas together (still do). We’re all three so unique in our own ways that we each bring something different to the table; we definitely balance each other out. Fate must have brought us together.
From day one, I’ve always believed in Trendom. Sure, I was scared because I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I believed it would be something big and I wanted to be a part of it. Our first month was quite a blur (probably because we were sleep deprived after staying up to write recaps of the OTRA shows in Australia). I didn’t realize just how fast Trendom had grown until I saw that we had 20+ girls writing for us by March 2015. Never did I imagine this type of success. However, all of this success doesn’t come free or easy. I think I can speak for the others when I say Trendom is a top priority in my life. We work hard and make sure to give 110% in everything we do to make this dream a reality— even more than it already is. And of course we wouldn’t be as successful without our readers. It still makes me giddy when people tweet that they love an article. Knowing that we are making people happy is a success in itself. So thank you readers, we’d be lost without you!
Now it’s time to thank my girls.
I look up to Amelia and Hannah; they’re practically my sisters now and whether they like it or not, we are stuck with each other for life because Trendom isn’t going anywhere. I couldn’t imagine going through this journey in life without the two of them. So thank you Amelia and Hannah for bringing me along on this amazing adventure.
I found happiness this past year; Trendom truly makes me happy and I am eternally grateful for it. To know that I have had a part in helping create a future career for not only myself, but for others as well is completely satisfying— which is still crazy to wrap my mind around, I might add. I don’t know where I’d be without Trendom and I definitely don’t want to think about it. My life has changed for the better and it’s only going to get better as the years go by.
Happy Birthday Trendom! Big things are in store for you.
A fangirl on a constant quest to create, share and live out a motto of all the love. You’ll find her in adventures of music and stories told through photographs.
To say this past year has been a whirlwind would be a massive understatement. Within that whirlwind, though, I’ve had one of the most life-changing, inspiring and fulfilling years of my entire life—and I have Trendom to thank for that. As we approached Trendom’s first birthday, I started looking back on the early days of this site (community, really!) and the only way to describe the feeling I get when I compare our humble beginnings to where we are now is this: I am in awe.
Through Trendom, I have met some really incredible people and made some true life-long friends. I now have two sisters, who I can also proudly call business partners: Hannah and Rae. I couldn’t have asked for two better partners; not only in business, but in friendship and in life. I am so proud of each of them and constantly inspired by their passion, dedication and follow through.
When you’re working hard every day to run an ever-growing site full of diverse personalities, covering diverse topics, and always striving to evolve into something more, it’s easy to lose sight of just how much you’ve done or how far you’ve come. Luckily for me, I have Hannah and Rae (and a staff of 35 Trenders!) to lift my spirits and motivate me through the everyday when times get tough. But taking a step back to giggle and smile, and perhaps get a little teary-eyed over some key milestones has really given me perspective on this amazing first year of Trendom.
As Hannah said, she and I had started our friendship talking over Twitter DMs and then texts. At first, it was just fangirling over One Direction and our shared dream of having a coffee date with Harry (imagine the music, art, philosophy, bad puns and terrible jokes you could weave into a good conversation with him…but I digress…). But then, we started talking about our backgrounds, what we did for work, and more importantly, what we wished for our careers. I remember one day when Sugarscape retweeted one of us and then tweeted us back and forth for a bit. We fangirled pretty hard. We imagined how awesome it’d be if we had jobs at Sugarscape. To write about the things we fangirled over and call it a job? A dream!
Soon, we decided, why not us? Why couldn’t we take our passions and turn them into careers? And then we met Rae, ambitious as ever, with the same idea: Why wait to join something great when we could build something great for ourselves? Fangirling had been an outlet that we each turned to, and that in turn led us to meeting each other. Positive fangirling was there for us when our lives had just seemed to stall; seemed to lack that sparkle that makes life something grand. So, it was only natural that positive fangirling became the motivation behind and foundation of our creative ventures together.
I can’t tell you exactly how a few girls with big dreams came together with the right mix of personalities, determination and hard work to create Trendom—it’s amazes me how quickly we brought this to life, how well it’s been received and how everything has just clicked, as if it were magic (or as Rae said, fate). The point is, it came together and here we are.
As I was looking back and getting nostalgic over the early days of Trendom, I found some gems… Check out the early days of Hannah and I DM’ing over Twitter, reveling in our shared passions and discovering our shared ambitions.
January 28th, 2015. That’s the exact day that Trendom was born. We hadn’t launched a site yet or even come up with content themes. That was the day that Hannah mentioned ‘this other girl on Twitter, Rae, who also wanted to start her own online publication’ and we got in a group text to brainstorm about that ‘pipe dream’ of a website we all wanted to create. It took us less than 24 hours to plan out our vision for our labor of love. Everything from the plan for our content types, to the launch date, the brand colors, the logo design, the name Trendom, and the mission statement behind it all. Less than 24 hours. How?? I think we must have entered a time warp.
From there, it took us exactly one week to actually pull it all together and bring it into reality. We created a full website, solidified content calendar assignments for the next month, wrote our initial content posts, put together graphics of our logo, icon and first promo media, and started a Twitter account and managed promotions to gain an audience for our first post (we gained our first few hundred followers before the site even launched!) all while we were each in full time work or school commitments outside of Trendom. Just typing that all out just now made my head spin, but at the time it was so invigorating that we barely even grasped just how much we’d done in so little time.
I can’t wait to see what the next year has in store for Trendom (as if we’re leaving it up to chance—we have big dreams and even bigger plans, people!) but I am so ready for all that’s to come, and I can’t wait to share it with all of you, our readers. If I could thank each and every one of you personally, I would. Trendom has always been built by fangirls, for fangirls. We’re grassroots. We’re the underdog. And each of our readers has the power to contribute to our future. Last but certainly not least, I can’t wait to continue this journey with our super-fantastic, kick-ass team of powerful minds: our Trenders. You are all so incredible and inspiring and we are so so SO happy to share this adventure with you! All the love, as always.
