Get Your Grill On-Celebrate National Hamburger Day!

In honor of National Hamburger Day yesterday (May 28th), I’ve pulled together some of the best recipes for burgers (and fries). I’m also including some vegetarian and vegan options for those of you who prefer a meatless version.

Green Chile Cheeseburger
New Mexico LOVES their Green Chile Cheeseburgers. The New Mexico Department of Tourism even came up with a Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail that has 63 restaurants that boast the best and most delicious versions of the famed cuisine.

  • 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 lbs freshly 
ground beef chuck
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp freshly ground 
black pepper
  • 6 burger-size slices mild Cheddar, American, or Monterey Jack cheese, at room temperature
  • 1-1/2 to 2 c.  roasted New Mexico green chile, chopped, and warmed
  • 6 large sturdy hamburger buns, or  6 large tortillas, warmed
  • Ketchup or mayonnaise
  • 6 thick slices of tomato
  • Crisp iceberg lettuce leaves and slices of mild onion, dill pickles, or crisp cooked bacon, optional

There is nothing quite like the smell of roasting green chiles in your backyard— it’s one of my favorite memories!

Stuffed Fiesta Burger
My dad makes these, and they are amazing!

  • 1 lb of ground beef
  • 1 package (1 1/4 oz) taco seasoning
  • 1/4 c. chive & onion cream cheese spread
  • 1/3 c. shredded cheddar cheese
  • 4 toasted hamburger buns
  • 1/2 c. salsa
  • 1 avocado, peeled, pitted, and cut into 8 slices

Basically, you make 8 patties, mix the cheeses, put the cheese mixture on one patty and cover with another. The cheese mixture comes out all gooey and delicious.

Asian Style Pork Burger
This burger is very juicy and bursting with flavor.

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground pork
  • 2 scallions, thinly sliced
  • 1 Tbs finely grated fresh ginger
  • 1 large garlic clove, minced
  • 1 1/2 tsp Asian sesame oil
  • Kosher salt & freshly ground pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns, split
  • 2 c. coleslaw mix
  • 2 tsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp soy sauce

Coleslaw is taken to a new level with rice vinegar, soy sauce and sesame oil.

Grilled Chicken Burger

  • 2 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 c. fresh sliced mushrooms
  • 1 tomato, seeded and chopped
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 2 pounds ground chicken
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c. fresh bread crumbs
  • 1 Tbs Old Bay seasoning
  • kosher salt to taste
  • black salt to taste

Chicken is a great alternative to beef or pork.

Vietnamese Style Banh Mi Burger
This crisp sandwich packs a kick!

  • 2 carrots, coarsely shredded                  1/4 c. unseasoned rice vinegar
  • 1 Tbs sugar                                            1/2 c. mayonnaise
  • 2 tsp Tabasco                                        2 tsp tomato paste
  • 1 garlic clove, minced                            Kosher salt & freshly ground pepper
  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef chuck                  1 1/2 tsp curry powder
  • 2 Tbs vegetable oil                                2 Tbs unsalted butter, softened
  • One 24-in. baguette, quartered crosswise and split
  • 2 pickled jalapeños, thinly sliced
  • 12 cilantro sprigs

The use of a baguette instead of a traditional bun gives this recipe a modern twist.

Salmon Burger
Salmon is packed full of protein and Vitamin D, so this is perfect if you want a healthy alternative to the conventional burger.salmon

  • 1 c. finely chopped red onion
  • 1/4 c. thinly sliced fresh basil
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 (1-pound) salmon fillet, skinned and chopped
  • 1 Tbs hot pepper sauce
  • 1 large egg white
  • Cooking spray
  • 8 slices focaccia, toasted

If you prefer your burgers meatless, read on!

Chickpea Burger

  • 1 carrot (medium size, grated)
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1-19 oz can chickpeas
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground coriander
  • salt & pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 Tbs flour
  • oil (for frying)
  • 2 slices whole wheat bread (cut in round shapes)
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • 1 red onion, sliced

You can always switch up the spices if you don’t prefer the ones that are used in the recipe!

Black Bean Burger

  • 1/2 medium yellow onion, roughly chopped
  • 1 Tbs chopped garlic
  • 2 -15 oz cans black beans, rinsed and drained, divided
  • 2 Tbs freshly chopped cilantro leaves
  • 2 Tbs freshly chopped parsley leaves
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 c. bread crumbs
  • Salt and fresh ground black pepper
  • 4 hamburger rolls

I’m not sure I would have ever thought of using beans in a burger, but this recipe sounds yummy!

No burger is complete without fries!

Sweet Potato Fries
These fries are not your average McDonald’s fries.

  • 2 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled
  • 2 Tbs olive oil
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
